A victim of Cirmcumstances essays
A victim of Cirmcumstances essays In the play, A Raisin in the Sun, Lorraine Hansberry asks us to imagine. What happens to a dream deferred? And then provides us with the suggestion that maybe a dream will dry up as a raisin in the sun. But even though it can, it doesnt mean it will. For example, Walter Younger is one of the central characters in the play, and though many would see him as the provider and bond that keeps a family together, that is not the case. Walters immaturity as head of the family, his tendency to ignore people around him, and his desire for material possessions lead him to turn the lives of the people around him upside down. Walter does not see himself as the head of the family; at least not at the beginning of the play. He thinks of himself as one of the kids. He constantly bickers with his sister and his wife. He feels misunderstood by his family members and most importantly, he sneaks around and does exactly what his mother told him not to do-just like any twelve-year-old would. In a sense, his son Travis shows more responsibility at his young age than his father does. Walter just wants to dream, fade into thoughts of big houses and boats, money coming from all directions and not a worry in sight. Unfortunately, he is not prepared to make the necessary sacrifices to make that happen. Though we may think that he made a lot of previous sacrifices like providing for his mother and sister or working as a chauffer for rich people, that is still not enough. That was normal life at the time. People had to work several jobs for minimal pay. Walters sacrifice was not far from the norm. He does well for his time but he doesnt even notice because he only worried about money and how to get more of it. As Mama says to Ruth in one of their conversations, Somebody would have thought my children done all but starved to death the way they talk about money here late ...

The Philosophy of Honesty
The Philosophy of Honesty What does it take to be honest? Although often invoked, the concept of honesty is quite tricky to characterize. Taking a closer look, it is a cognate notion of authenticity. Heres why. Truth and Honesty While it may be tempting to define honesty as speaking the truth and abiding by the rules, this is an overly-simplistic view of a complex concept. Telling the truth- the whole truth- is at times practically and theoretically impossible as well as morally not required or even wrong. Suppose your new partner asks you to be honest about what you have done over the past week, when you were apart: does this mean youââ¬â¢ll have to tell everything you have done? Not only you may not have enough time and you wonââ¬â¢t recall all details, but is everything really relevant? Should you also talk about the surprise party you are organizing for next week for your partner? The relationship between honesty and truth is much more subtle. What is truth about a person, anyway? When a judge asks a witness to tell the truth about what happened that day, the request cannot be for any particular whatsoever but only for relevant ones. Who is to say which particulars are relevant? Honesty and the Self Those few remarks should be sufficient in clearing up the intricate relationship there is between honesty and the construction of a self. Being honest involves the capacity to select, in a way that is context-sensitive, certain particulars about our lives. At the very least honesty requires an understanding of how our actions do or do not fit within rules and expectations of the Other- where the latter stands for any person we feel obliged to report to, including ourselves. Honesty and Authenticity But theres to the relationship between honesty and the self. Have you been honest with yourself? That is indeed a major question, discussed not only by figures such as Plato and Kierkegaard, but also in David Humeââ¬â¢s Philosophical Honesty. To be honest to ourselves seems to be a key part of what it takes to be authentic: only those who can face themselves, in all their own peculiarity, seem to be capable of developing a persona that is true to herself- hence, authentic. Honesty as a Disposition If honesty is not telling the whole truth, what is it? One way to characterize it, typically adopted in virtue ethics (that school of ethics that developed from Aristotleââ¬â¢s teachings), makes honesty into a disposition. Here goes my rendering of the topic. A person is honest when he or she possesses the disposition to face the Other by making explicit all those details that are relevant to the conversation at issue. The disposition in question is a tendency which has been cultivated over time. That is, an honest person is one that has developed the habit of bringing forward to the Other all those details of his or her life that seem relevant in conversation with the Other. The ability to discern that which is relevant is part of honesty and is, if course, quite a complex skill to possess. Further Readings Despite its centrality in ordinary life as well as ethics and philosophy of psychology, honesty is not a major trend of research in the contemporary philosophical debate. Here are some sources that can be useful in reflecting more on the challenges posed by the issue. The entry on virtue ethics at the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, where the example of honesty comes up a few times.David Humeââ¬â¢s Philosophical Honesty, a brilliant short piece, too often forgotten.

Scenario question Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 5000 words
Scenario question - Essay Example Related jurisprudence shall be discussed and analyzed; explications will be given to the end that the instant controversy would have a viable solution for the benefit of both parties and to the members of the global community as a whole. However, before delving into the merits of the case, it is equally essential to determine a fortiori, the competence of the ICJ to take cognizance of the dispute, for the Court can only exercise its adjudicative powers if indeed it has jurisdiction over the parties and over the subject matter. When the court is devoid of jurisdiction, it follows as a matter of law that it has no competence to decide on any controversy brought before it. Hence, any discussion shall firstly focus on the question of jurisdiction. It is well to emphasize that the jurisdiction of the ICJ can only be invoked if the state-parties submit to its jurisdiction or when they have presented their Declaration of Acceptance to the jurisdiction of the Court through the Optional Clause of the Statute of the ICJ.1 That being stated, the assessment of the dispute is in order. State A is a coastal State. That State established a 12-mile territorial sea by national legislation. On 3 October 1990, a commercial vessel flying the flag of State B struck mines in the territorial sea of State A. The explosions caused damage to the vessels and loss of life. Holding that to be the responsibility of State A, the Government of State B commenced negotiations with State A but in vain. Thus, on 25 June 1991, State B submitted the dispute to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) based solely on Article 36 (2) of the Statute of the International Court of Justice. Thereupon the Government of B asked the ICJ to adjudicate to the effect that the Government of State A was internationally responsible for the consequences of the incident and it must make reparation or pay compensation. States A and B are both Parties to the Charter of the United Nations. State A accepted the optional clause of the Statute of the ICJ in 1986 (emphasis supplied). The Declaration of State A reads: 'I declare on behalf of the Government that State A recognizes as compulsory ipso facto and without special agreement, in relation to any other State accepting the same obligation, that is to say, on condition of reciprocity, the jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice in conformity with Article 36, paragraph 2, of the Statute of the Court, for a period of ten years from the date of the deposit of the instrument of ratification.' State B also accepted the optional clause of the Statute of the ICJ in 1987 (emphasis supplied). The Declaration of State B reads: 'I declare on behalf of the Government that I recognize as compulsory ipso facto and without special agreement, in relation to any other State accepting the same obligation, that is on condition of reciprocity, the Jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice, in conformity with Article 36, paragraph 2, of the Statute of the said Court, for all disputes which may arise in respect of facts or situations subsequent to the ratification of the present declaration, with the exception of those with regard to which the parties may have

Define a Remote Access Policy to Support Remote Health Care Clinics - Essay Example The personnel in charge of maintenance and creating security policy have the responsibility to identify technology changes in health care systems. A key area of concern in the modern society is to what extent privacy of people are protected. Advances that have been made by technology in the recent past has enabled storage of large information amounts with limited expenses involved.Similarly, technology has also hastened access to information within limited duration of time. Unknown individuals may access private information a factor that makes availability of security policies an essentiality. Programs of security awareness are designed in such a way to sensitize users on organizationââ¬â¢s security policy. Security awareness education to the employees does not only focus on giving them access to information of the organization. It goes beyond giving them emails and password to use by covering aspects such as training on monitoring and gathering information using various tools (Fisher, 2001). Training of users and the systems administrators play a crucial role in an organization. The systems administrators and the management need to realize that security threats are very critical emanate from the inside (Fisher, 2001). For this reason, constant logging of user activity, monitoring internet, and email access are important ways of tracking breaches of both internal and external threats. If this is taken into account, the four principles of business security will have been upheld. They include, protection of information, maximizing on operational effectiveness, reducing corporate liability and protection of the organizationââ¬â¢s

Steps of the Communication Process
Steps of the Communication Process Question 1 1.0 Introduction The communication process made of a message being sent and perceived by the others. The message may be verbal or non-verbal. Communication means talking, making friends, interacting with people, having relationships either private life relationships or work related. Communicating with others is essential in leading a normal life. We all communicate in our own way but we need to learn how to do it effectively. Communication has two types, there is verbal communication and non verbal communication. The verbal is includes oral communication mean that through words and writing. Example, a lecturer writing at the whiteboard and speaking at the class, and the students are writing what the lecturer spoke out and read what lecturer wrote out. Second, non-verbal communication is without words mean that is expressive behaviors and body language/body signal. Examples, a boy kiss a girl to show the girl that he love her. The communication process is the guide toward realizing effective communica tion. It is through the communication process that the sharing of a common meaning between the sender and the receiver takes place. Individuals that follow the communication process will have the opportunity to become more productive in every aspect of their profession. Effective communication leads to understanding. The communication process is made up of four key components. Those components include encoding, medium of transmission, decoding, and feedback. There are also two other factors in the process, and those two factors are present in the form of the sender and the receiver. The communication process begins with the sender and ends with the receiver. When encoding a message, the sender has to begin by deciding what he/she wants to transmit. This decision by the sender is based on what he/she believes about the receivers knowledge and assumptions, along with what additional information he/she wants the receiver to have. It is important for the sender to use symbols that are f amiliar to the intended receiver. A good way for the sender to improve encoding their message, is to mentally visualize the communication from the receivers point of view. 1.1 Types of Communication Communication can occur via various processes and methods and depending on the channel used and the style of communication there can be various types of communication. 1.1.1 Verbal communication Verbal communication is divided into written and oral communication. The oral communication refers to speaking words in the communication process. Oral communication can be face-to-face communication or a conversation over the phone or on the Messenger chat over the Internet. Spoken conversations or dialogs are affecting by voice modulation, volume and even the speed and clarity of speaking. The Another type of verbal communication is written communication. Written communication can be via letters, newspaper, mail, or email. The effectiveness of written communication depends on the style of writing, grammar, vocabulary used, clarity and precision of language. Below are some types of verbal communication: Types of verbal communication speaking and writing reading and listening Face to face discussions Telephone conversations 1.1.2 Non-verbal communication Non-verbal communication is includes the body language or expressive behaviors of the person who is doing, which will include the body posture, overall body movements, and the hand gestures. The facial expressions are also play a major role while communication since the expressions on a persons face say a lot about his/her mood. On the other hand gestures like a handshake, wave hand to say hello or goodbye, a smile or a hug can independently convey emotions. Another example, a person want to show uncertainty will make some ehh, ahh, ermm sounds to mean that are not sure. Non verbal communication can also be in the form of pictorial representations, signboards, or even photographs, sketches and paintings. Types of non verbal facial expression and eye behavior gestures and postures vocal characteristic personal appearance touching behavior use of time and space Verbal communication also includes the written word. Written includes emails, books, letters, magazines, newspapers, notes, faxes, announcements, commercials etc. Anything that is written is also verbal communication. Oral communication has also besides real words, mere grunts, cries, whimpers that people make. Each sound we make can be interpreted and seen as a certain language. Communicating with others is done more easy and it`s more easy also to understand if the two people speak the same language. 1.2 Process of Communication Channel Medium Receivers send feedback to sender Sender has an idea1 6 Sender transform idea into message Receiver interprets message Speaking Verbal 2 5 Receiver gets message Sender transmit message Writing Non-Verbal 3 4 1.3 How does one ensure that the intended audience has received the right message? Communication is a two way process. It needs to have a sender, a receiver and a message. In order to have a successful ensure that the intended audience has received the right message, we need to send the message clearly. The key to a great communication understands each other. We should know that when communicating, there might appear some barriers. Below are some of barriers of communication: Between people 1) Difference in perception 2) Incorrect filtering 3) Language problems 4) Poor listening 5) Different emotional states 6) Different background 7) Misunderstandings Within organization 1) Information overload 2) Message complexity 3) Message competition 4) Lack of trust 5) Inadequate communication structure Very important when communicating to also listen to what the other person is saying. Communicating can be through body language, through signs or through visual representations. People have found many ways to communicate. The second most important way to communicate is through body language. The way we move our body and the mimics we make sends also a message, that`s why we should learn how to control our body language. Below is some way to ensure that the intended audience has received the right message: Sending the Message There are four elements involved in sending a message. First, as the sender, formulate the message intend to communicate. Next, consider possible barriers that may affect the message. This includes experience, the term will use and even feeling toward the subject or the audience. External barriers such as noise must also be considered. Third, encode the message, you put the message into the words you want to use. Last, clearly communicate (send) the message. Receiving The Message, there are also four elements involved in receiving a message. The audience (receivers) will first hear and/or see the message you sent. Second, the message is affected by external barriers, if any, and the audience own internal barriers. Possible internal barriers may include the audience experience level, their understanding of the terms used, their attitude toward the material, or the way they feel about you. Third, the audience decodes the message through the use of mental images. For instance, when you say the word circus, the receiver does not see the letters that form the word. Instead, a mental image of some sort appears. Fourth, the audience interpret the message. Clearly, at this point in the process there is no way for you to determine that all of the audience received the message you intended. To determine this, you must get feedback. Feedback Feedback, which may take several forms, provides essential information about your success in communicating the message. To get feedback, have the audience respond to oral questions and encourage them to ask questions. The audience non-verbal behaviors also provide important clues as to their understanding of the material. Facial expressions and body movements often indicate when audiences are unsure about the meaning of your message. You should be careful in accepting a yes response when you ask Do you understand? Obtain meaningful feedback by asking questions that require the audience to provide answer which indicate that they in fact do understand exactly what you intended. Listening Listening is one of our most important communication skills. It is an active process of hearing and understanding that demands concentration and attention. Both you and your audience have responsibilities in the communication process. You must ensure that the learning environment is free of distractions that might interfere with the audience ability to listen. Be alert to the non-verbal behaviors of your audience. Facial expressions reveal much of what is happening in the mind of a audience. A quizzical look indicates some misunderstanding has occurred or a question needs to be addressed. An audience leaning slightly forward and maintaining good eye contact with you is probably interested and sincere about learning. Raised hands and relevant questions are sure signs that you are communicating effectively. Learn to determine if audiences are listening by the type of feedback they provide. Effective listening depends on motivation, and you are the prime motivator in your classroom. Aud ience should arrive for instruction ready to learn. They should participate and ask questions as they arise. Audience must understand that they have responsibility for their own learning. This requires active listening on their part. 1.4 Conclusion Communication is a two way process. It needs to have a sender, a receiver and a message. In order to have a successful ensure that the intended audience has received the right message, we need to send the message clearly. The key to a great communication understands each other. We should know that when communicating, there might appear some barriers. The communication process made of a message being sent and perceived by the others. The message may be verbal or non-verbal. House On Mango Street :: essays research papers
In Sandra Cisneros book, The House On Mango Street , the theme is of how fantasizing keeps you going. In the story there are many different quotes and stories explaining how Esperanza and her friends would daydream about life in the future. Explaining how Esperanzaââ¬â¢s friends are waiting for the perfect husband to come and marry them and take them off out of Mango street. Almost every story has someone daydreaming about how much better life is going to be when they get older. Explaining how there house is going to be big and about how they are going to be much happier then how they are now. The quote from the book that Esperanza wrote was ââ¬Å"I want to be like the waves on the sea, like the clouds in the wind, but Iââ¬â¢m me. One day ill jump out of my skin. Iââ¬â¢ll shake the sky like a hundred violins.â⬠This poem explains to us that Esperanza wants to be somebody. It tells us that Esperanza wants to make a change in this world and wants to be remembered when she dies. This is where Esperanza tries to reach out and explains her feelings with everyone but canââ¬â¢t. A quote of Esperanzaââ¬â¢s dream house was ââ¬Å"Not a flat. Not an apartment in back. Not a manââ¬â¢s house. Not a daddyââ¬â¢s a house all my own. With my porch and my pillows, my pretty purple petunias. My books and my stories. My two shoes waiting beside thee bed. Nobody to shake a stick at. Nobodyââ¬â¢s garbage to pick up after. Only a house quiet as snow, a space for myself to go, clean as paper before the poem.â⬠This tells us what Esperanza is looking forward to in her life. What she thinks her future is going to be like. Another quote from Esperanza is ââ¬Å"One day I will pack my bags of books and paper. One day I will say goodbye to Mango. I am too strong for her to keep me forever. One day I will go away.â⬠This quote explains to us the need to Esperanza to get out of Mango Street. The need for her to get away from all of this which she dislikes.
